Upper Sûre Lake
The great lake of the north, the country's drinking-water reservoir and the one place you are allowed to swim. Kayaks, sailing and wooded trails, forty minutes from the capital.
Further into the north, the Upper Sûre Lake is the largest stretch of water in the country — some 380 hectares of clear green water held back by the Esch-sur-Sûre dam, first filled in 1959 to give Luxembourg its drinking water and part of its electricity.
Because it is a reservoir, motorboats are banned on the whole lake and a protected zone around the dam is left to the water; everywhere else you may swim, kayak, sail, dive and windsurf. It is, in practice, the country's one great open-water swimming lake, in season from May to September. The storybook village of Esch-sur-Sûre sits in a loop of the river below its ruined castle, inside the Upper-Sûre Natural Park.
